John Alexander Maultsby (1818-1887) from Whiteville, NC, entered the University in 1835 and joined the Philanthropic Society. After graduating in 1839, he became a lawyer and merchant. In 1850 he was elected to the NC House of Commons and served as a University trustee from Columbus County in 1868. Eventually, he moved to St. Louis, MO.
